Our school dog Otto
During the summer holidays of 2019, a little Labradoodle named Otto trotted through our school building for the first time to get to know his future ‘workplace’ as a school dog. When he was a little older than a year and already knew many basic commands, Otto and Mr Venus successfully completed ten months of training as a teacher-school dog team. During this time, Otto's attendance at ORI was gradually increased. To this end, rules are worked out in „skill“- lessions before the dog's first visit. During his presence in the classroom, Otto is generally allowed to move around freely. For example, he seeks out individual students and gets his share of cuddles. When it becomes too much for him, he retreats to his dog crate, where he must not be disturbed.
This systematic approach can improve the teacher-student relationship and the learning atmosphere. The positive influence on the students' social behaviour and the class atmosphere is noticeable. Studies show that not only petting an animal, but even its mere presence in the classroom has a stress-reducing effect. A school dog is a learning companion who accepts every child as they are and conveys warmth and emotional closeness without prejudice. This promotes a relaxed and calm classroom atmosphere and thus also supports the learning process in a positive way.
The implementation at school is as follows:
• We always and everywhere show consideration for people who have allergies, fears or aversions to dogs.
• Interaction with the dog is voluntary. No one is forced to interact with the dog.
• The students learn how to interact with dogs appropriately.
• The dog is always under Mr Venus' supervision.
• Otto is always kept on a leash on school grounds.
• There are binding agreements and rules that must be strictly adhered to.
Please feel free to contact Mr Venus for further information.
